Loikaw township facing fuel shortage

14 June 2021

Some retailers in Kayah State’s Loikaw Township are running out of fuel, according to Eleven News.

As a result, most fuel stations since 9 June have begun selling under a quota system, a local resident told the outlet.

He said that large vehicles, including fuel bowsers, had not been allowed to enter Loikaw since 30 May, and it was unclear how long the situation would last.

The man did not provide a reason for the blockade, but security concerns may be the cause.

Residents of Loikaw mainly rely on motorcycles for transport, and taxis are rare.

In the last few weeks, there have been reports of clashes between security forces and offshoots of the People’s Defence Force in nearby Demoso Township.

In late April, it was also reported that the military had banned the import of fuel in Hpa Kant Town in Kachin State, causing prices to skyrocket to over Ks8,000 per gallon.

The Kachin Independence Army clashed with the military multiple times since the coup in locations across the state.

Hpa Kant Township is a centre for the mining of gems and precious stones and metals in Myanmar.

Like many other areas of the country, the town has seen significant protests following the February military coup.

On 2 May, security forces killed one person and wounded at least three others at a protest in Hpa Kant.

Security crackdowns on protests have led to the death of over 10 people in Kachin State to date.
