Energy in Myanmar

re

Myanmar has a diverse energy and power sector with significant potential for growth given the country's strong economic fundamentals and future demand outlook.

Many segments of the market remain underdeveloped compared to regional peers, creating an array of business opportunities across equipment supply, services, development and newly-emerging areas such as renewables.

We expect to see greater private-sector involvement in the industry over the coming years, plus a broader geographical spread of foreign companies entering the market.

  • Upstream opportunities are centred around Myanmar's substantial gas reserves, with exploration and development work continuing in offshore areas.
  • Downstream and fuel remain underdeveloped segments of the market, with relatively little local refining and petrochemical capacity and a fragmented fuel distribution market.
  • Conventional power has been transformed recently by a series of new LNG-to-power plants, with more projects in the pipeline as Myanmar seeks to overcome ongoing seasonal power deficits.
  • Renewable energy has recently gained momentum with a first competitive solar tender and more movement on wind projects. Hydropower remains a mainstay of the country's generation mix and we see a strong outlook for the off-grid segment of the renewables market.

The Myanmar Energy Monitor provides detailed, up-to-date and original industry information on oil and gas, fuel, power, renewables and the wider energy sector.

It is designed to help companies and other organisations identify business opportunities, track the industry, find partners or suppliers, conduct market research and follow developments.
